Guidelines
Western Art conveys the essence of the western way of life, both past and present. The hopes, dreams and anguish of the men, women, and children who helped to populate western America and presently reside there. The complexities of wild versus tame, new customs against old, towns in opposition to nomadic life; these are all struggles of the western lifestyle. The life and times of the miners, the Native Americans, ranchers, mountaineers; the peoples that occupied and tried to tame the country are all a part of this country. Landscapes regarding the desert, hills or mountains are part of this; oceanscapes are not. Flowering cacti, wild flowers, blooming bushes are fine, but floral arrangements don’t fit into the western theme.
The magnificent pride of homesteaders, Native Americans, ranch hands and their individual cultures are all a part of the Western lore. This is the foundation of Western Art and this is what we wish to present at Calico’s Art of the West.
